Exploring the Halal Certification Controversy Amid Local UMKM Growth
In a recent seminar with UMKM participants hosted by PT Karabha Digdaya Depok, Timoty Ezra, S.H., M.H., Managing Partner at S&P Law Office, shared his perspective on the statement made by Haikal Hassan, Head of BPJPH, regarding mandatory halal certification for all products in Indonesia. Timoty expressed a differing opinion, choosing not to elaborate further due to the early days of President Prabowo’s new administration.
But, Timoty emphasized the importance of securing trademarks before beginning the halal certification process, as trademarks are not only essential for halal certification but also for BPOM registration. He highlighted the potential risks of future trademark disputes and encouraged UMKM to prioritize brand protection.
Additionally, Timoty provided guidance on copyright and trademark awareness to various youth community groups in Tapos, Depok, underscoring the legal benefits of protecting intellectual property for long-term business stability.
